If you’re standing in your home, staring at decades of belongings and memories, wondering, “How am I ever going to pack this all up?”—you are not alone.

I see you. I hear you. I’ve helped so many in your shoes take that first step out of overwhelm and into clarity.

I’m Melissa Shaw, a real estate professional serving Portland, OR, Vancouver, WA, and Mid-Willamette Valley. My passion is helping clients sell their homes and move into the next chapter of their lives with ease and confidence.

Whether you’ve raised your kids here, hosted your grandkids, cared for a loved one, or lived through major life changes. This home holds more than just furniture and boxes—it holds your story. But right now, you know it’s time for a transition.

Let’s make it easier by taking the weight off your shoulders and focusing on just three intentional and straightforward steps to help you move forward in your real estate journey.

When Selling Your Family Home Feels Overwhelming

For many homeowners in Portland, OR, Vancouver, WA, and Mid-Willamette Valley, especially those in well-loved neighborhoods near nature, schools, and community spaces, making a move isn’t just about real estate.

It’s emotional.

It’s a massive life shift.

And sometimes, it feels impossible to start.

I always remind my clients: “Moving is not just physical. It is mental, and it can at times be really, really emotional.”

That’s why having the proper guidance—and a clear roadmap—is essential.

Below are three powerful, simple steps I’ve shared countless times with my clients who are stuck thinking, “I can’t do this.” The truth is: You can. And with support, you will.

  1. Just Start

This might sound too simple—but honestly, the best momentum begins with the smallest step.

“Just start with one drawer, one closet, one bedroom. Just think: one. One thing. One space. And start there.”

By taking action, even the tiniest action, you kickstart a mindset shift that breeds confidence.

From there, that momentum builds, room by room, until you look back and realize—you’re doing it.

  1. Ask these Two Questions

Part of the emotional load comes from decision fatigue. What to keep? What to toss? What to donate?

To help guide you through this, always ask:

  • If I were to buy this item today, would I want it?
  • Do I need this item where I’m going?

These two questions cut through the noise and help you evaluate what really matters for your next chapter.

Sort your belongings into three basic categories:

  • Keep
  • Donate
  • Let go

And remember: if it’s “keep,” make sure it’s by choice, not guilt.

  1. Create a Bless & Release Box

This is one of my most heartfelt tips—because I know how many of the items in your home carry emotional significance.

“Let yourself feel whatever it is that you need to feel and let it go. Place it in that bless and release box.”

This special box is for those in-between items—things you’re emotionally connected to but won’t realistically bring with you.

When you create space for gratitude, it becomes easier to transition with peace.
