Embracing PNW Winters: Tips to Energize Your Days in Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA
Let’s face it: winters in the Pacific Northwest can feel long. The grey skies, misty rain, and shorter days can sometimes feel like they drain your energy. But they don’t have to. As someone who has lived in the Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA areas since 1997, I’ve learned to embrace these winters and thrive in them.
If you’re like me and seek ways to stay active, create joy, and bring motivation into the season, I’ve got some tried-and-true hacks to share with you.
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME
Your surroundings play a huge role in how you feel. During PNW winters, adding light and pops of color to your home can energize the space and lift your spirits.
* Incorporate brighter throw pillows and cozy textured blankets.
* Switch to light, sheer fabrics for decor like curtains.
* Consider cheerful colors for bedding, like yellow or soft blues.
Yes, it’s dreary outside. But that doesn’t mean your home has to mimic the weather.
MOVE YOUR BODY, EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT
When it’s cold and grey outside, it’s so tempting to curl up under a blanket and stay put. I get that. But trust me—pushing yourself to get moving works wonders. Once you get going, your body releases all those feel-good endorphins, and suddenly, the season seems less daunting.
Living in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, means we’re surrounded by brands like Columbia Sportswear, Nike, and Adidas. There’s no excuse for not gearing up and heading out for a walk, even in the rain.
* Explore neighborhoods known for walkability.
* Consider trails in your local parks for a quick (and mood-boosting) escape into nature.
* Bundle up for a jog or bike ride around town.
Don’t let the weather dictate your day. Movement is the reset button you need.
DIVE INTO LOCAL ACTIVITIES
Winter is the perfect excuse to explore the fantastic local businesses and activities right outside your doorstep. This area is packed with year-round spaces to keep you entertained.
* Coffee Shops & Boutiques: Warm up with a coffee and shop for treasures from local retailers.
* Indoor Destinations: Visit community centers or gyms, join pottery or cooking classes, and rediscover your hobbies indoors.
* Wineries & Breweries: Whether you prefer a bold red wine or a craft beer, the PNW’s wine country and breweries offer cozy settings to unwind.
Take this time to support your community while reconnecting with its many offerings.
PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE & SCHEDULE PLAY TIME
Here’s a life lesson courtesy of my five-year-old: when I asked him to get dressed the other morning, he responded, “Yeah, but I gotta have some playtime first.” When did we stop thinking like that?
It’s too easy for us to get bogged down in our to-do lists. But winter is a great time to slow down and show yourself some kindness.
* Schedule downtime for hobbies like reading or painting.
* Treat yourself to spa-worthy evenings with skincare routines or baths.
* Put “fun” on your calendar—family game nights, baking with the kids, or movie marathons.
Sometimes, all it takes is giving yourself permission to press pause and enjoy small, joyful moments.
